BIOGRAPHY

Studied with his father, Victor Augusto Nepomuceno, a violinist and organist at the Fortaleza cathedral, and Euclides Fonseca, in Recife. He lived in Rome, where he studied with Eugenio Terziani, Cesare de Sanctis, and Giovanni Sgambatti. In Berlin, he studied composition with Heinrich von Herzogenberg, piano with Theodor Lechtitzki e Heinrich Ehrlich, and organ with Arno Kleffel. Specialized in organ with Alexandre Guilmant, in Paris. Married the Norwegian pianist Walborg Bang, a pupil of Edvard Grieg, who stimulated him to devote himself to nationalizing music in Brazil. In Germany, he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in his works. Back in Brazil, was director of the National Music Institute and of the Society of Symphonic Concerts. He is the Patron of the Brazilian Music Academy chair No. 30.
