BIOGRAPHY

Son of a clarinettist who performed with Carlos Gomes, he helped in the foundation of the Haydn Club and the Mendelssohn Club in São Paulo. In 1887, he went to Italy and France; in the latter, he studied with Émile Durand, professor of Debussy. In São Paulo and Paris, he performed form the Emperor D. Pedro II and, under the influence of European music, wrote Works such as the Schumannianas for piano and the Andante Romantique. But the Brazilian folklore was his greatest inspiration and he wrote works such as the Variations on a Brazilian Theme, the Brazilian Tango and the Brazilian Suite.
